➑️ Leaning Into The Meme...

​

➑️ Getting meme'd is likely a celebrity's worst nightmare...

...But, the implications behind having your not-so-amazing moments become one of the top moments of the year have changed significantly in the past decade thanks to social media--particularly, TikTok.

​Ariana DeBose is freshly an Oscar winner for her incredible portrayal of 'Anita' in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story (2021), is a Broadway veteran, musical film icon (Hamilton, THE PROM), is the next Disney princess (Wish, 2023).... and just crowned herself "OUR WOMAN KING" with her performance at this years' BAFTA's. The audience and viewers alike were stunned and...confused--by some of the choices made in her musical homage; and were even more stunned to find out said choices had been rehearsed. While DeBose caught a good amount of backlash (now speculated to have caused her complete withdrawal from Twitter), she's also recieved a ton of praise for committing to the bit, providing much-needed albeit unintended hilarity, and for being camp AF amongst a notoriously acclaimed (..and some might say stuffy) audience of serious thespian peers.

A few take aways:

  • BAFTA has never been better. Maybe I'm just a terrible former film student; but, I personally have never been more invested in or even interested in the BAFTA's as I am now that it's been meme'd in this way; and I know I'm not the only one. Lots of people in my demographic and younger had never even heard of the ceremony until now; and its' viewership has climbed by about 1.4 million people since last year. It is the most watched BAFTA's since 2019. I'm not saying that is all attributed to DeBose, but I'm not NOT saying it either. Combining views, rewatches, streams, etc. It's undeniable...She DID THE THING.

  • A whole new wave of fans are finding out about Ariana's already illustrious career, while others are giving her her flowers, and connecting the dots as to where they've seen her before. She is at the front and center of our attention, for better or for worse, and in my opinion if certain cards are played correctly by her team; it'd definitely be for the better. I'd love to see the difference in Hamilton, West Side Story, and The Prom streams on Disney+/Netflix pre and post BAFTA's!

  • We're all waiting for what's next. You think nothing can top this moment, until something does. Her steam train of accolades and upcoming roles isn't slowing down. This lays an excellent path for her to absolutely stun in her next project(s), in performance and in REVENUE.

​

  • Leaning IN to the meme. She is building community and nurturing audiences old and new without even being all that present and "in" it, online. That's the power of the meme, y'all! This one moment is bringing people together in a way we've not seen since the "uncut gems" moment that swept TikTok/Twitter and catapulted Julia Fox's career in 2022. While I've never been meme'd and totally respect an artist wanting to take time away, not get involved and move on, as Beyonce's internet can be very cruel--I could also understand if she rallied with her team and found ways to ride the wave to optimize marketing/partnership and social media opportunities; and would be curious to see where that takes her culturally and professionally in the next year or so.

The Bottom Line:

What you think may have been an absolute FAIL online could be your next big moment/hit or saving grace. It all depends on what you make of it, and how you choose to deal with it (or not). Viewers and followers love to see the humanity in the brands and celebs that they follow--even if for a brief moment in time it's to absolutely roast them with a remix. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

How can you leverage your audience's attention span even in moments you percieve to be weaknesses or "fails"?

  1. Hit 'em with an uno-πŸ”„! Acknowledge what everyone's talkin' 'bout in a public statement that ties back to your original purpose/sale/next project.
  2. Give it to your team and ping-pong the best options as to how to move forward, still optimizing the moment (or meme-ent?) in the sun; tying it all back to your sale/project/what-have-you.
  3. Lurk in the shadows until it blows over, still sparingly active online otherwise; which creates a demand. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and perhaps, the impact of the meme more powerful.
  4. Use it as research. How has this moment impacted your analytics? Take note, and create content accordingly.
